Read Classics is run by Guillaume Berrido, Zürich, Switzerland. Questions: [email protected].

What we keep

Your email address, so you can sign in. The books on your shelf, and what you have bought or been given, so they appear on every device. We also keep a short record of sign-ins and emails we send you.

What we don't do

No ads. No tracking or analytics. We never sell or share your details for marketing. How far you've read stays on your phone.

Who helps us

Cloudflare delivers the website. SendGrid sends our emails. Stripe takes payments, as the seller of record that handles tax and receipts: we never see your card number.

Details

Your account data is stored on our own servers in Switzerland, with encrypted backups. Sign-in codes are stored only in scrambled form and expire after 10 minutes. If you use Explain in the app, the passage you select is sent to Google to write the explanation; your name and email are not sent. Invitation links are deleted once the email is sent. We keep payment records for as long as the law requires.

Where your data goes

Your account lives on our servers in Switzerland. Our helpers may handle some of it in the United States or the EU, under recognised legal safeguards.

Details

Cloudflare, SendGrid (Twilio), Stripe and Google are certified under the EU–US and Swiss–US Data Privacy Framework, and process your data only to provide their service to us. Switzerland, the EU and the UK recognise each other's protection.

Your rights

You can see, correct, download or delete what we keep about you, and object to how we use it. In My Books, choose Download my data for a copy, or Delete account. For anything else, email us. We reply within 30 days, free of charge.

If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Swiss data protection commissioner (edoeb.admin.ch) or to the data protection authority where you live: in the EU, see edpb.europa.eu; in the UK, the ICO (ico.org.uk).

How long we keep things

Your account and shelf: until you delete them. Sign-in codes: 10 minutes. Sign-ins: two weeks after you last use them. Email addresses on sent emails and unused invitations: 90 days.

Details

Payment records are kept for 10 years, as Swiss accounting law requires. When you delete your account, they no longer show your name or email. Backups are encrypted, stay in Switzerland and are kept only for a limited time.

Children

Accounts are for people aged 16 and over. Younger readers are welcome to read with a parent's account. If we learn a younger child has an account, we delete it.

Deleting your account

Sign in on the website, open My Books and choose Delete account. Or email us. Your online shelf is removed; books already downloaded stay on your devices.

Emails from us

We only send sign-in codes, invitations and receipts. News about new books is optional and off unless you turn it on.
